In college, my friend Mindy and I had a summer job where we traveled to summer camps and helped with their recreation activities. At one camp, they asked us to lead a cheerleading camp. Now asking either of us to teach cheerleading is just laughable--but together, it was sure to end in disaster.
Thankfully, we had a little bit of notice, so that we could have a consultation with my sister Robin, who happened to have some skills. She came to visit us for the weekend and showed us some moves, chants, jumps, etc. Most notably was DAGGERS. Place your arms to your side. Now raise your fists up to your shoulders (thumbs touching shoulders). Now envision that you have a dagger in each hand. Now in very quick motions, pretend you are jabbing at someone (just about 6 inch movement) intermettently. There...you've got it! It also helps if you say, "daggers, daggers, daggers, daggers" while your are doing this move. Well, thanks to Robin, we learned enough to pull it off for some grade school girls.
So, why you ask am I bringing this up now so many years later. Well, on my answering machine the other day was a message from Mindy with the revelation that the "herkie" jump was named for it's creator...Lawrence "Herkie" Herkimer, of Dallas, TX.
This herkie is dedicated to Mindy for making me smile!
Hilarious! I hope your girls know "daggers"!
