So if you will remember the kitchen ceiling was covered in ceiling tile (look here if you need a refresher). Actually...do go back and take a look. What you don't see is around the edges. When they installed the tiles, the did not go all the way, so beyond the bad idea of the tiles, they left a crack all the way around. I don't know if the intent was to add a trim or if they couldn't figure out how to get all the way to the edge. Regardless. It was coming down.

That ceiling is popcorn, except for two spots that had obviously had water damage in the past (the upstairs bathroom is right over this. So instead of scraping the popcorn and patching the damage, this intricate system of tracks was installed. And if you are wondering, yes they are shimmed with paint stir sticks.
These are the tiles we took down. In an attempt to recycle whatever is possible, my dad took the tracks to the scrap metal place and we cashed in a whopping $2.14. Oh, and if you are needing a reference point on how tall that stack of tiles are...
If you add the other small stack, they are taller than me. Why on earth anyone would go to all that trouble to install THAT ceiling is beyond me.
